What is Reflexology?
Healing work on the feet and hands can be traced back to Egyptian times, in the form of pictographs dating as early as
2500BC. The Chinese are also known to have practiced a form of Reflexology around 5000 years ago, and are
generally credited with its origins. Further origins of Reflexology have been documented in other ancient cultures such
as the native American Indians. The feet also have a special place in many modern cultures as a symbol of spirituality
and contact with the earth in all senses.
Modern Reflexology practice is based on a "foot map" and the idea that the body is reflected on the soles of the feet.
For example, the reflex points relating to the head and neck are on the toes and the pelvis is reflected on the heels.
Pressure is applied to these reflex points to influence the the health of the corresponding parts of the body. Reflexology
is a holistic treatment, and therefore aims to treat the "whole person " rather than any symptoms. For this reason every
reflex point is worked on during every treatment. Regular treatments help to balance the body and maintain good health,
as well as being a relaxing treat!
What can I expect from a treatment?
The treatment takes place with the client either lying down or sitting up on a massage table,
whichever is most comfortable. The feet are cleansed and then the treatment consists of a
combination of reflexology and foot massage and takes about an hour. Reflexology has a
detoxifying effect and more benefit will be gained from a light diet and plenty of water to drink
for 24 hours after the treatment. Before any treatment can take place with a new client I carry
out a short consultation with some medical and lifestyle information, and occasionally
consent from the Client's Doctor has to be obtained before any treatment can take place.
Who will benefit from Reflexology?
Reflexology is not just a treatment to have when experiencing symptoms of illness, however it offers a natural and drug-
free treatment option for a variety of conditions, including:
